Q: So what can I use to make my films?
A: Point and Shoot digital still cameras, disposable video cameras, cell phones, webcams, security cams, screen capture software...you get the point.
Q: Do I have to pick one of these?
A: No, feel free to use as many as you like.
Q: What does 'link to film' on the submission form mean?
A: We ask that you put it up on vimeo [etc] first so that our judges can make sure it fits under our guidelines, as well as providing an efficient
way for a first round of judging. If you're selected for the next round, you will be notified by either email or singing telegram.
Q: So there's this badass song by Sepultura that will totally rock in my film about bunnies, can I use it?
A: Unless you are a member of Sepultura, no. Creative Commons (CC) is a great place to start.
Jamendo is a music site that uses Creative Commons, and we definitely recommend browsing Archive.org's
list of CC licensed music (especially the 78's). Or why not check out up and coming bands on sites like Unsigned or Myspace and contact one's you would
want to use to see if they would be interested in letting you use their music. You will need a song release, which you can get HERE. For a full break down on all the specifics of licensing music,
check out ASCAP.
Q: What happens if I get selected?
A: If your film is chosen by our judges, you'll be sent an email which describes how to get us the desired uncompressed format. The reason we ask for this is because most 'save for web' exports from video editing software
result in an often highly compressed format. These kinds of videos can have severe quality problems when projected on a large
screen (and yes, we will be projecting your films on as big as we can get). So that's why we ask for an uncompressed video. But don't worry, you'll be sent a full set of guidelines on how to do it if you are unsure.
Q: I like prizes. If I am selected will I get anything?
A: Some of the great prizes we've given out so far are:
$150 gift certificate to any restaurant (courtesy of CHOW.com)
Merchandise from Smartsco
Free membership and free driving credit from Zipcar
- Nokia N95 phone, a $700 phone, video player and camera (courtesy of kyte.tv)
