In 1999 Ben Slotover and Peter Waldeck set out to make a short film in Waldeck's home town of Vienna, Austria. Unfortunately Ben's video camera was in a bag that was lost by Austrian Airlines its way over from London. Using the only equipment they could scrape together: a 3.3 mega pixel digital camera and a minidisk recorder, they went on to make 'The Demon Mask' - a 'picture story' told in 141 still images and dialogue recorded using a pair of headphones instead of a microphone. From this inauspicious beginning, the world of Jim and Heinz was created.

11 years and 7800 stills later, the 15th film has been completed and Jim and Heinz films have won awards at festivals worldwide, including the Disposable Film Festival 2009 and the London Short Film Festival in 2006 and 2008. During this time minidisks have become obsolete, cell phone cameras routinely exceed 3.3 mega pixels and Hi-Def is threatening to supersede film altogether . Originally formulated in the experimental cinema of the 1960s, the picture story genre has finally come of age at a time when everyone carries the means to make movies in their pockets and no one has to trust their bulky video equipment to Austrian Airlines. On the 6th of March as guest of the Disposable Film Festival, Ben Slotover presents a screening of selected Jim and Heinz films along with a short history of the picture story genre, from cave paintings to medieval tapestry to comic books to 'Blow-Up' and 'La Jetee' to 3D and beyond.

About the Filmmakers

Ben Slotover: Director, Actor ('Jim'), Co-writer. Ben Slotover was born in 1971 in London and has been making films since abusing the family super-8 camera as a child. He started making shorts on video while at University in Dublin and helped arrange several festivals, screenings and found the college TV station. After university, he worked on 3rd unit camera, Video playback and runner for large scale film and TV productions before branching off into the film exhibition world. With his writing/production partner Paul Elliott, he founded The Blunt Club, a regular show of comedy shorts and live comedy, which they took to the Edinburgh festival in 2004. While making long and short films, Ben has also made a series of instructional 'Zero budget filmmaking tips' films which have proved consistently popular online and at live shows alike. Ben has also made several films in 3D using a process he developed himself.

Peter Waldeck Co-writer, Actor: ('Heinz') Peter Waldeck was born in 1970 and is based in Vienna, Austria and is the director of theater troupe Casa Del Kung Fu. Waldeck has written and directed such theatre productions as The Supersonic Shakespeare Remix, Vietnamania, The Robber and Crack House Of Horror. Waldeck's theater works are packed with crazy a number of short scenes that shift between slapstick, surrealist humor, blockbuster aesthetics, ill-tempered philosophy, ambient sound collages and bizarre equipment. In addition to the theatrical evenings, he runs the Japanophile movie club Otakoo Saloon. Waldeck also works in genres such as comics, film and music performance. His melancholic comic series "El Pablo vs. El Diablo" (with Jan Limpens) appears regularly in the quality Brazilian newspaper "Folha de S. Paulo", the newspaper with the biggest circulation in Latin America.
